Tuesday Tunes: Life in Lyrics

My fellow country music listeners will recognize this:

I learned the hard way real early in life that money don't grow on a tree... (1)

It was stuck in my head all day yesterday... not the song, just that one line. It's kind of a depressing lyric to have stuck in one's head. Especially in conjunction with this article Panties sent me about how having a degree is worthless (but only for now- a la Avenue Q).

Avenue Q actually sums up the article pretty well:

What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge
Have earned me this useless degree.
I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet.
The world is a big scary place.
(2)

(Now you don't have to read the article... but you should, it's good.)
So, even if you're a college graduate, this might describe your life right now:
You work real hard
And the pay's real low
And every hour
Goes oh, so slow... (3)

You know what, though? Despite the depressing theme, I feel a little better about myself after reading it. I DO have a degree behind me- even if it isn't getting me anywhere. And apparently, lots of people have way suckier lives than I do. I need to remind myself of that more often.

Besides, I'm young. There's time for improvement!

But somehow I can't shake
The feeling I might make
A difference to the human race.
(3)

I have trouble embracing the unknown. I don't need to know who I'm going to marry or how many kids I'll have or what I'll spend my entire life doing; I think I just want to know that I will be happy. And you know how to make that happen? Live in the moment and BE happy. (Meanwhile, search for a career that would make me happy. That's the harder part.)

This is one of my favorite songs of all time and perfectly describes life right now:

And it's a great day to be alive
I know the sun's still shinin' when I close my eyes
There's some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can't every day be just this good?
